Her multidisciplinary practice spans different and overlapping contexts that range from medium-specific to socially-engaged. She works with performance score, task-based devising, and improvisation. When she directs and choreographs, Shaw draws upon fiction, the vernacular, and her experiences on the ground within community spaces, in order to evoke imagery, metaphor and concepts that guide her creations. She sees the rehearsal as a practice of new ways of being with a group of people. The horizontality of the three areas of her practice - creation, performing and facilitation - means that they are constantly in dialogue and exchange with each other. Shaw is interested in how we can live meaningful lives, and how art can create a space where human beings can wade into the morass of what it means to be human together in our current times. She seeks to create possibilities for people to question, understand and relate to one another.&nbsp; Shaw’s current direction involves further developing her series of outdoor roving participatory performances - ‘p a c e’ (2024) and ‘para para’ (2026) -&nbsp; a series that explores the soft-politics of movement in a public space, and is a celebration of collective rhythm and joy. The active bus terminal is a place of beginnings and endings, where daily commutes often follow the pulse of the city. Nearby, the Rail Corridor bustles with activity with joggers, cyclists and people, passing through the bus terminal as a waypoint. walk walk (Singapore Deviation version) is a film and installation about the theme of walking. Inspired by the commonplace activity along the rail corridor, Tan Pin Pin reflects on ‘walking as a carefully managed practice in Singapore, shaped by public agencies and private developers’. In the film, Tan Pin Pin, together with Amanda Heng and other interviewees, respond to the theme of walking through their anecdotes and lived experience. The artist further ‘highlights ideas about freedom of movement, how walking is a basic expression of this freedom, and how public transportation further supports our mobility.‘ p a c e is a performance centred on rhythm. It follows people moving in and out of sync, exploring how we move, move together and move with one another. It is an invitation to reimagine the act of waiting, walking and the way we move through public transient spaces such as the bus interchange. Having been a facilitator in the community for a few years, I was asked to collaborate with the kids on the second chapter of this edutainment video - ‘Why are sleep and rest important?’ and produce it as a fully stop motion animated segment. Chapter 2 and the full video can be found below. Four children teamed up with myself and Jessica Goh to bring this vision to life— we wrote the script together, story boarded, designed and crafted clay and paper sets, went outside to look at what interesting things we can pick up from the environment, recorded voiceovers, and shaped the messaging around the importance of healthy rest habits.&nbsp; // The So Relaxing! Chef Programme is part of the larger Better Eat Better (BEB) initiative, which has been empowering children and families since its launch in 2022. BEB focuses on fostering healthier habits through food literacy, sustainability, and well-being, encouraging child-centric participation and collaboration. Building on BEB’s success, the So Relaxing! Chef Programme expanded its mission to include sleep hygiene as a key component of community wellness. This was a step up and a challenge from working one-on-one with Amos at his home last year, as we typically only have a few sessions with the kids.&nbsp; My desire was to allow their individuality and also their identity as a class to shine through in this short video, in a process where the children express their individual quirks and interests. For a full year in 2024, this playground within a rental flat cluster at Boon Lay Drive was a weekly site of gathering, play and connection for a group of facilitators and a total of 194 children across the year, engaging around 30 children in each session, We used found and everyday materials that could be found around the neighbourhood and fell into a routine of creating and playing with games, toys and installations that would appear and disappear with each session. Time, space and relationships held this community together and also brought new children into the fold.&nbsp;By activating the common playground as locus of social interaction, LGPO! establishes informal contacts regardless of socio-economic class. Let’s Go PLay OutSide! (LGPO!) was initiated in 2016 as the first flagship programme of 3Pumpkins, a socially-engaged arts organisation. The programme is a social practice that encourages communities to play together, connecting people by engaging the youngest and most vulnerable yet most imaginative members of the society – children. The work stems from recognition of a lack in arts activities accessible for children and families from less privileged background, and explores the role of artists as agents of social change. I chose to spend time and energy with the children who liked to play, run around, and in that space everything was sacred. every time i came down for a session, it was always about finding something new, finding a new connection with different kids.i began to document in an attempt to capture these moments, and also wondered how to protect the identities of these children who simply wanted to play, but also to share the dynamism of connection. the camera was always in full view.the choice to work with animation came because i was (am still) inspired by this kid who is an incredible animator. so i began to trace and outline bodies, engaging in the labour of animation, thinking that the answer lay in movement. but over time the movement captured in a loop of predetermined strokes felt too closed. i am often reminded of the many specific instances where children let go of things that i would find remarkable. they’re so good at being here and moving on. perhaps the work was simpler than i thought and a still image in this case, would be less imposing on the many many ways and shapes that connection and attention exists in this space.this process of translation have made this work dear to me. from what i gather from the outside, i think the work is straightforward. it has been very nice to hear what people and most importantly the community who live there have to say about these new murals.a large part of me made it for the people/kids of TTKC who use the long walkway to walk to school and back home everyday. i hope these traces of your friends, these familiar outlines can accompany them.
